If you find that you are easily distracted and have trouble focusing on a task, you’re certainly not alone. But before you run to a doctor looking for medicine to cure ADD, ADHD, or the myriad other possible issues, try these 5 tips that can help you concentrate better.

Meditation – For many who suffer from ADD, ADHD, or simply have difficulty concentrating, meditation has been known to help with the symptoms. Meditation forces you to focus on concentrating, which will improve your ability to concentrate on other tasks in your life.

Eliminate Distractions – For many, the issue isn’t an inability to concentrate so much as an inability to not be distracted. While that may seem like the same thing, it is actually not. You can concentrate for extended periods of time on a task when there is nothing else dragging you away, however it is harder when you are being pulled in a million directions. For instance, practice putting your phone away, closing your email, and shutting your door to focus on your work or studies.

Exercise (Your Body) – As with almost everything, exercising can help with concentration. Research has shown that those who exercise are more able to tune out distractions and focus on the topic at hand. Concentration issues can often be linked to will-power issues, and exercising can help with both.

Exercise (Your Mind) – Think of concentration as a muscle – the more you work on it, the stronger it will be. There are countless apps, books, and tutorials available to help you practice concentrating. By taking time to focus on your concentration skills, you will get better at concentrating.

Focus on Focusing – When you are doing a task which you should concentrate on, focus on actually concentrating. By focusing on staying focused, it will be easier to hold yourself accountable and, thus, stay on task.

Concentration is a skill that needs to be honed. By following the above tips, you will be setting yourself up for success at anything you do.
